Singapore's energy guardian keeps blazing ahead
Credit for the nation’s energy conservation debut must be given to the National Energy Efficiency Committee (NEEC), established in April 2001 by the then Ministry of the Environment. It led Singapore on a drive for cleaner and more energy efficient nation, and with preserving clean air in mind.
It started with the corporate players. The industrial, building, transport, and consumer sectors were encouraged to efficiently use energy. It promoted the use of cleaner energy sources, such as natural gas and renewable energy sources. The Committee also pitched Singapore as a testing ground for pioneering energy technologies (for instance, fuel cell and CNG cars), and a hub for the development and commercialisation of clean energy technologies.
The NEEC continues to be the coordinating body behind Singapore’s energy initiatives.
